The mountain range of Dirfys was probably named paraphrasing ” Delphi”, the name of its highest peak. In this case, Dirfys or Delphi means the navel, the center. In ancient times, Delphi was a place to worship the goddess Hera, Queen of Heavens, where her marriage to Zeus took place.
According to another version, the mountain’s name comes from “Dirfious”. The “Dirfious” were mythological figures depicted with snake’s leg. They were sacred and powerful because the serpent was considered sacred.
According to legend, in Dirfi grows an herb called “lampidona”, which means “shine or shimmer”. Lampidona is claimed is to shine only at night, while remains unseen during the day. The one who would get a “lampidona” would become extremely wealthy, because he would acquire the ability to turn everything he touched into gold.
